Litigation and Forensic Accounting

Accounting Services For Litigation Support
Despite how simple an issue may seem at the time, legal proceedings—or litigation—can sometimes become a costly endeavor that has you reaching far deeper into your pocket than you first anticipated.  It therefore makes good sense to consider an accounting plan to protect not only your current valuables and property—or assets—but also your future well-being.

What Is A Forensic Accountant?
Though it sounds like something one would expect to see featured on an episode of “C.S.I.”, a Forensic Accountant is simply a specialist in the field of Forensic Accounting who will conduct a detailed investigation of all of your business records and look for irregularities for litigation purposes.  They have skills above and beyond that of a Certified Public Accountant so that if a problem exists, they will let you know what it is, help you assess its potential to go before a court of law and assist you in preparing for it.

Your Forensic Accountant and Litigation Support
A Forensic Accountant will be able to offer you assistance whether pursuing litigation against another party or finding yourself the defendant of someone pursuing litigation against you.  They are there to identify problem areas, analyze those areas, explain to you how they are helpful to your lawsuit or potential harm they may cause if you are being sued, help prepare you for testimony and also review any material experts the opposing team have hired.  Once prepared, your Forensic Accountant will then provide assistance for the trial itself.
Forensic Accounting differs from traditional accounting in that a Forensic Accountant must combine their accounting, auditing and investigative skills in such a way that they are considered suitable to be recognized by a court of law.  General accounting programs do not include the specialized education necessary to practice in this area.  However, while most Forensic Accountants have a degree in Accounting, many will also obtain a professional certification as a Certified Fraud Examiner or the CPA.  Rest assured, when you hire a Forensic Accountant, you are bringing a creative, persistent, organized and discreet member onto the team who possesses the sound professional judgment you need.

Your business is your livelihood.  You’ve worked hard to build it and provide for your family and for yourself.  Unfortunately, there may come a day, especially in the current economy, when someone tries to take that away for their own gain.  Should that time ever come, you may need the service of a Forensic Accountant like the ones at Mullin & Associates, CPAS, PC.
